Becoming a Better Writer: Foundations of Essay Writing (Grades 9-12)

July 19-30, $400
9-11 a.m.
Instructor: Kailey Cole, Upper School English, Latin School of Chicago

This course will strengthen the fundamental principles of writing a variety of different essay forms. Students will receive guidance on articulate writing, mechanics, and topic development as they produce well-crafted essays with an effective thesis, support, introduction, and conclusion. Types of writing will include analytical thesis-driven essays, personal narratives in the vein of college admission essays, and timed writing in preparation for in-class essays and the ACT/SAT. Through an emphasis on best practices for the revision process, students will become comfortable identifying and utilizing ways to strengthen their own writing as they move forward to the next academic year. The small nature of this course allows for greatly personalized feedback and guidance. All levels are welcomed and encouraged.
