If you’re looking for a great summer job or challenging career that’s in demand, the Red Cross Lifeguarding program is the place to start. Through videos, group discussion and hands-on practice, you’ll learn teamwork, rescue and surveillance skills, First Aid and CPR/AED and other skills you need to work as a professional lifeguard. Latin's own Aquatics Director, Danielle Carlson, will teach participants the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies and prevent drownings and injuries.
Students that successfully complete this course will receive a certificate of Lifeguarding that is valid for 2 years, and certificates in First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer that are valid for 2 years. Students will be provided with a pocket mask and lifeguarding manual.
Students must successfully complete the following prerequisites in order to take the course. The prerequisite testing will take place on Wednesday, June 6 at 4:30 p.m. and is required of all participants. Students that do not attend or fail the prerequisite testing cannot complete the course, and no refunds shall be offered.
To successfully complete the course, students must attend the entire course, participate in all skill sessions/drills, activities and scenarios, demonstrate competency in all required skills and scenarios, and pass the final written exam with a minimum grade of 80 percent
Participants must be at least 15 years old at the time of the class and pass the following swimming requirements:
- swim 300 yards continuously
- tread water for 2 minutes using legs only
- starting in the water: swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7-10 ft., retrieve 10-lb. brick, return to surface, swim 20 yd. back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute 40 seconds.
