A coeducational day school serving students JK-12

Extraordinary Opportunities Abound

About Summer at Latin

You don't have to be a Latin student to enjoy day camp and summer programs we have to offer!

Our goal is to be the best program in Chicago by providing high-quality educational and recreational programs to all. To achieve this, we offer extraordinary opportunities to children of all ages, from tots to teens. Whether it is review or enrichment in an academic course, or engagement in a variety of camp activities, Latin encourages each child to pursue his or her passions.

Programs are scheduled by your child’s age/grade as of September 1, 2018.

Camps (ages 4-14)

Summer is a time to enjoy the outdoors, and take advantage of all the opportunities that Chicago has to offer. Each day will bring exciting activities, from games and citywide field trips to swimming and sports. Campers will have the chance to play and learn together, and enjoy being kids! Preschoolers to teenagers have opportunities to develop self-confidence, make new friends and, most of all, HAVE FUN!

Camp Overview

CAMP STAFF
We believe staff is the key to our campers' enjoyment. Therefore, we take great care in hiring and training a qualified and mature staff who have experience working with children, and who will create a fun and unique day for their camp groups. Counselors assigned to camp groups are responsible for ensuring the safety of their groups and for facilitating age-appropriate activities during the day.

HEALTH AND SAFETY
A health officer serves in both the Upper School and Lower School buildings while programs are in session. Upon registration, you will be asked to complete a medical form for your child. Please be certain it contains all the information needed to properly care for your child. Feel free to contact the Day Camp Office prior to registration to discuss any health concerns.

SWIMMING
The aquatics curriculum follows the American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program. Every full-day camp group is scheduled for weekly swimming lessons. Certified swim instructors assure that each camper enters the water at an appropriate pace and skill level. Each camper participates in a skills assessment and is assigned to an appropriate swim group. Children in the Navigators Program begin with Level I.

LUNCH
Lunch is provided for all full-day campers, four days a week, including a barbecue once a week. On field trip days, campers need to bring their own non-perishable lunches and drinks.

FIELD TRIPS
All full-day campers take weekly field trips around the Chicago area. Campers will travel by school bus to off-campus field trips. Camp Discovery campers might have special field trips locally.

BEHAVIOR
Latin Day Camp encourages the highest standards of honorable conduct, civility, and a sense of fair play as is consistent with the student standards of behavior of The Latin School. Children enrolled in Day Camp are expected to be polite to their fellow campers, counselors, and other camp or school personnel, and to respect the property of others and the school. Campers are not to leave the building on their own, and they are expected to be with their assigned camp groups at all times. Latin Day Camp reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to deny any camper the opportunity to participate in camp if the child's social conduct or behavior is deemed unsatisfactory by the camp administration.

The Latin School occasionally takes photos for use in print and electronic publications and for archival purposes. If you have any questions about this practice, or the use of your child's photograph, please contact Latin's Communications Office at 312.582.6072.

Classes (grades 6-12)

Latin's Summer Programs offer a variety of credit and non-credit activities primarily for middle and upper school-aged students, with some opportunities available to children as young as 6 years old. Our programs are available to all students - including non-Latin students. All courses meet each day, Monday through Friday of the assigned week(s).

Classes Overview

Admission
Admission is open to all interested students who meet the specific course-related requirements found in the course descriptions.

Credit
The credit value for a particular academic course meets all applicable standards for an accredited secondary school. Credit will only be issued if the student completes all necessary coursework as proscribed by the instructor. Latin offers courses of one-half credit (the equivalent of a semester course) and one credit (the equivalent of a year-long course) for students in or entering high school. For non-Latin School students, the Summer at Latin Office will forward, at your request, a copy of the course description, and your teacher’s evaluations of your work to your home school. Specific credit acceptance by schools, including the Latin School, will be made at the discretion of that school by its appropriate administrators. Please check with your school in advance for its specific standards and rules on granting credit.

Attendance
Regular attendance is essential for successful completion of Latin’s Summer Programs. Unexcused absences may result in loss of credit in an academic course or dismissal from the program. There will be no refund of tuition if a student voluntarily withdraws or is dismissed due to non-attendance or misconduct.

Financial Aid
Financial aid is available only to Latin School students who will be receiving aid in the fall of 2018 and is primarily apportioned for credited classes, with limited aid available for other academic courses. Latin students should contact the Summer at Latin Office for specific information about financial aid before registering.

Dress and Conduct
Students’ clothing must be neat, clean, and appropriate for school. Students are expected to follow all school rules and to conduct themselves in a respectful and polite manner.

Books
Some courses may require books, textbooks, or supplies. Students will pay an additional fee for materials or books as required by a course. Please contact the Summer at Latin Office at 312.582.6080 to determine if the class for which you are registering requires any of the above. Required books will be available for sale through the Summer at Latin Office beginning in June. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that necessary books are acquired prior to the start of class.

Lunch
Food service is not provided during the summer. Students are encouraged to bring bag lunches. A 30-minute break for lunch is scheduled for all full-day courses.
