Latin hosts Model UN invitational conference, drawing 220 delegates

Latin's Model UN Club turned in an incredible performance at the St. Ignatius Invitational Conference (SIMUN) on Saturday, November 2. Eight members of the school’s delegation earned awards: Kai G., Graham S. and Alex S. won Best Delegate; Andres D. and Ralu N. won Outstanding Delegate; and Kayley M., Thomas D. and Aryan P. won Honorable Mentions.

The group followed up this exceptional outing by hosting Latin’s first-ever invitational conference (LSCMUN I) on Saturday, November 16. The event drew approximately 220 delegates from Chicago-area high schools who spent the day debating, drafting and passing resolutions on current issues such as NATO expansion, cyber warfare and oil prices, and historical topics such as the Camp David Summit of 1959 and the Napoleonic Wars. Additional highlights of the conference included a video message from Governor Pritzker; remarks by IL State Representative Margaret Croke; and a philanthropy initiative about brain cancer that raised money for the Lou and Jean Malnati Brain Tumor Institute at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Ike Barinholtz ’95 and David Stassen ’95

Latin alumni Ike Barinholtz ’95 and David Stassen ’95 are in the spotlight as co-creators and executive producers of the new Netflix series “Running Point.”

The show, which was recently renewed for a second season, follows Isla Gordon (Kate Hudson), who is unexpectedly appointed president of the family-owned Los Angeles “Waves” basketball team and must navigate the challenges of leading in a male-dominated NBA.

Barinholtz has contributed to a variety of shows and films over the years, including “MADtv,” “Eastbound & Down,” “The Mindy Project,” “Bless the Harts,” “The Afterparty,” and “History of the World: Part II.” He made headlines last year when he won “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” alongside his father, and donated the winnings to charity.

In addition to “Running Point,” Stassen has collaborated with Barinholtz on several other projects, including “The Mindy Project,” “History of the World: Part II,” and the films “Central Intelligence” and “Maximum Truth.”

Barinholtz has recently appeared on national television programs such as “The Today Show” and “Jimmy Kimmel Live” to promote his new Apple TV+ show “The Studio.”

Barinholtz and Stassen will be celebrating their 30th Latin reunion this fall.

Roman Rockstar: Skyler Schrempp ’01

Skyler Schrempp ’01 is a published historical fiction author for young readers. Her first novel, "Three Strike Summer," received rave reviews and was featured on several “best of” lists, including Bank Street College of Education’s Best Children’s Books of the Year, Chicago Public Library’s Best of the Best, and Horn Book Fanfare 2022 Booklist. The book was also an official Illinois Reads selection, a winner of the Chicago Public Library’s mock Newbery, a finalist for the Oklahoma Book Awards, and the recipient of a Judy Lopez Memorial Honor for children’s literature.

Reflecting on her time at Latin, Skyler is especially grateful to the teachers who challenged her to think critically. She gave a special shoutout to Mr. Urioste and Mr. Baker for introducing her to some of her all-time favorite books. She also shared that Saul Fript taught her to consider point of view and the concept of the banality of evil; Greg Baker appreciated her for the reader she was; and Ann Hartedgen provided her with a sense of community and helped her access her joy.

Some of her fondest memories came from time spent in the art rooms with Mr. Bough and Mr. Harris, and the photo lab with Ms. Ross—spaces that encouraged creativity no matter one’s interests. She also treasured memories of the green room: the smell of hairspray; the excitement of everyone crammed together hissing “shhh!” at each other, covered in glitter; and the bittersweet tears when a show closed. As she describes it: "utter magic." Skyler’s favorite traditions were the pre-show rituals in the theatre department. She said she won’t spill the details, adding "if you know, you know."

During her time at Latin, she participated in Dance Concert as a freshman and later became involved in theatre during her junior and senior years, thriving in advanced acting alongside her fellow theatre nerds. She also co-founded S.A.A.P., the Student Alliance with Animals and Plants.

Today, Skyler has two daughters, Elowen (4) and Rosie, who is only 2 months old. She returned to campus earlier this year to serve as a featured speaker for our Life After Latin event.
