Dear Families, Faculty, Staff and Trustees,

On Wednesday, January 19, Latin will host its annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Commemoration.

The theme for this year is "Nourishing Our Sense of Belonging: Embracing Our Identities as Individuals and as a Community." Students in all divisions will have opportunities to engage in workshops on a variety of topics including identity, faith, equity, and to participate in activities with a focus on belonging and community. Lower schoolers will also collaborate on a community art project with artist Indira Freitas Johnson.

This year's MLK Jr. Day of Commemoration will feature interfaith educator and speaker, Eboo Patel. Patel is the founder and president of the Chicago-based national non-profit Interfaith Youth Core (IFYC). IFYC's mission is to work towards "an America where people of different faiths, worldviews, and traditions can bridge differences and find common values to build a shared life together."

Patel will speak to middle and upper school students on January 19, and to the parent/guardian community on Tuesday, January 18 (see details). View his TEDxChicago Talk  "Building bridges - religions' role in our societies"  and check out his book "Out of Many Faiths: Religious Diversity and the American Promise."

Best,

Eleannor Maajid, Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
