On Saturday, February 17, Ana P. '18, Julian L. '19, Matt H. '19, Chetan V. '19, Rose B. '20, Kenny P. '20, and Tejas V. '21 competed at the Marengo 2A Sectional site for the Masonic Academic Bowl Tournament. They were joined by Bianca A. '21, who came to get some additional experience and to cheer on the rest of the team.
In the preliminary brackets, Latin went 5-0, defeating Lisle (330-180), Oregon (440-90), Winnebago (370-170), Westmont (350-180) and Chicago Christian (310-230) to earn the #1 seed from our bracket. In the semifinals, Latin defeated Byron 320-190 to earn a spot in the final. Chicago Christian defeated Timothy Christian in the other semifinal to earn chance at the title with a fifth-round rematch. After the first teamwork section, Latin trailed for the first time of the day, down 40-50. The team stormed back to take the lead on the next question and never looked back, cruising to a 320-190 victory. This successful defense of our Sectional title earns the team a chance to defend our 2016 and 2017 2A State titles at the tournament next month.
Ana led the four upperclassman starters with 21 tossups, followed by Chetan (18), Matt (17), and Julian (7...not many fine arts tossups on the day, so Julian had to snag 10th amendment and DNA tossups as well). As subs and sometime-starters, Kenny and Tejas each added four tossups, and Rose scored an impressive six in a similar role. With excellent leadership from Ana, all seven players contributed on teamwork questions, and the team showed excellent spirit while competing in some great games.
The team will compete in the 2A State Tournament at Bloomington High School on Saturday, March 3.
