As part of the fifth grade TOWER (Treating Others With Etiquette & Respect) project, middle school teachers help fifth graders understand the importance of self-advocacy in the classroom.
Students brainstorm, role play, and watch videos that relate directly to why and how they should ask teachers for assistance. This includes writing a proper email, asking for and confirming an appointment, and using proper etiquette and manners when asking for help in person – skills that will help them in high school, college and beyond. Students are expected to be polite when asking, prepared when meeting, and respectful of the time for which they are asking. They use an "advocacy passport" to track their success. From now through spring break, students are responsible for gathering stickers for their passports by visiting teachers and advocating for themselves in class.
