Innovation Day was formed by junior David Malkin, in efforts toward student-led engagement and exposure to leaders, concepts and opportunities in today's most immersive and innovative industries. On February 2, CEO of 1871, Howard Tullman, and Jesse Diaz, founder of Chicago's very own Dark Matter Coffee visited Latin to speak to students in honor of Innovation Day. Tullman offered a glimpse into the world of 1871 and how innovators work. He noted that great entrepreneurs care the most, want to make a difference in the world, and are prepared to work hard and persevere. Diaz founded Star Lounge Coffee Bar in 2007 in the Ukrainian Village neighborhood of Chicago, the flagship to Dark Matter Coffee. He says he has relied on sheer tenacity to learn every aspect of the coffee industry and the keen skills acquired through experience as a small business owner. Diaz's company has grown to four retail locations and is known for imaginative artwork, experimental and innovative approaches to coffee.
