Senior kindergarten teachers love reading and hope to instill the same feeling in their young students.
During class, the students read and discuss books (from various genres) every day. SK teachers use the workshop model to teach new reading strategies or behaviors, give time for children to practice them, and then share what they practiced. It is important to them to help students find “just right” books to support their developing skills, as well as allow children to choose books that support their interests.
Interested in how you can read with your senior kindergarten student at home? Check out these four helpful tips:
1. Read to your child every day!
2. When you read, talk about the book. Discuss the characters and setting, make predictions, share your favorite part of the story…
3. Read environmental print – signs, logos, box labels, etc. Discuss what you notice about the letters.
4. Celebrate wherever your child is on the reading continuum! The range of ability is WIDE in young children. Even children who are “pretend reading” a favorite book are doing just what emerging readers do.
