Summer is a time to enjoy the outdoors, and take advantage of all the opportunities that Chicago has to offer kids. Each day will bring exciting activities-from games and field trips to swimming and sports. Campers will have the chance to play and learn together, and enjoy being kids! Tots to teenagers have opportunities to develop self-confidence, make new friends and, most of all, HAVE FUN!
Camp Staff
The director of Latin Day Camp oversees all camp programs and acts as a liaison to the school, camp, and community. We believe staff is the key to our campers' enjoyment. Therefore, we take great care in hiring and training professional and mature staffers who have experience working with children, and who will create a fun and unique day for their camp groups. Counselors assigned to camp groups are primarily responsible for ensuring the safety of their groups and for facilitating age-appropriate activities during the day.
Head Counselors oversee staff within their age division as they plan camp activities and work with families to ensure a positive camp experience. Senior
Counselors are professional teachers and graduate students who have experience working with children in their age group. Junior
Counselor positions are filled by graduating high school seniors and college undergraduates who are interested in, and have experience, working with young children. High
School Counselors are highly responsible, and have a passion for working with children. Each camp group will, at minimum, have a senior counselor, as well as a junior counselor or high school counselor. Program
Instructors work with camp groups to teach specific skills. These members of our staff have special training and expertise in sports, technology, drama, or creative arts.
Our camper-to-staff ratio for our youngest campers (Camp Discovery and Navigators) is 4:1, allowing campers to learn and grow under the guidance of trained counselors. As campers progress to Voyagers, a camper-to-staff ratio of no more than 8:1 is maintained. For our oldest campers (Adventurers, Explorers, and Trekkers), a camper-to-staff ratio of no more than 10:1 is maintained.
Health and Safety
A health officer is scheduled to serve in both the Middle/Upper School and Lower School buildings while programs are in session. Upon registration, you will be asked to complete a medical form for your child. Please be certain it contains all the information needed to properly care for your child. Feel free to contact the Day Camp Office prior to registration to discuss any health concerns.
Swimming
The Latin Day Camp aquatics curriculum follows the American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program. Every full-day camp group is scheduled for weekly swimming lessons. Certified swim instructors assure that each camper enters the water at their own pace and skill level. Each camper participates in a skills assessment and is assigned to an appropriate swim group. Children in the Navigators Program begin with Level I, with lessons two days per week. Voyagers, Adventurers, and Explorers have lessons three to four days each week.
Lunch
Lunch is provided for all full-day campers, four days a week, including a barbecue once a week. On field trip days, campers need to bring their own non-perishable lunches and drinks.
Field Trips
All full-day campers take weekly field trips around the Chicago area. Campers will travel by school bus to off-campus field trips unless otherwise noted.
You should register your camper for the program that is appropriate for your camper's age or grade as of September 1, 2008.
