"After my child was stung by a bee at recess, it really impressed me that
the nurse knew all about my child's special health concerns, and more than that,
that she took the next step by notifying both me and the parent of my child's
after school play date."

The Extended Day program supports Latin families by offering a safe, fun program
before and after the school day for students enrolled in junior kindergarten*
through fifth grade. The program provides a balance of organized activities
and the free time that is important for children throughout their busy days.
This years program will offer a host of exciting and educational activities
including crafts, games, computers, and outdoor play. For those students who
require time for homework, a quiet space will be available. The 2006-2007 Extended
Day program begins on your child's first regular day of school. This
is Tuesday, September 4, 2007, for students in second through fifth grade,
and Wednesday, September 5, 2007, for students in junior kindergarten through
first grade. Extended Day ends on the morning of
Friday, May 30, 2008. When school is cancelled due to inclement weather, there will be no Extended Day.
Staff
The Extended Day directors bring a wealth of experience to the program. Their daytime work as classroom teachers means they have a working knowledge of Latin students. It also means that due to their full class schedule, it is very difficult for the directors to respond to last-minute attendance changes. Under the supervision of the directors, Extended Day teachers guide children through the various options of the day. The directors can be reached or at (312) 582-6089 or by e-mail: extendedday@latinschool.org.
Facilities
Extended Day takes advantage of many facilities in the Lower School. Children spend time in classrooms, gyms, the library, the cafeteria, and the rooftop playground.
Extended Day Options
Before School
Morning Extended Day takes place from 7:30 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. For your child's safety, do not drop your child off before 7:30 a.m., as there is no supervision available. Before the school day begins, students are offered a simple breakfast and the opportunity to talk with friends, play games, draw pictures, or read.
After School
Several enrollment options are available from 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., as detailed on the registration form. Children partake in an array of activities designed to provide creative outlets, relaxation, and a chance to release energy. Snack with water is provided.
Policies and Procedures
Children cannot be dropped off before 7:30 a.m. or picked up later than 6 p.m. A charge of $5 per minute will be assessed for time at the program outside of Extended Day hours. School policy is that Extended Day services will be denied until the late fee has been paid in full. Regular late pick-up will jeopardize your child's enrollment in the program.
The Extended Day Program reserves the right to dismiss a student whose behavior is not consistent with the guidelines outlined in the Latin Lower School Handbook.
Flex-Time Service
At Extended Day, we understand that daily lives can change. To be responsive to our families' needs, we offer an option to utilize program hours on an occasional basis. To sign up for this service, check the appropriate box on the Extended Day registration form to purchase a non-refundable block of Flex-Time hours. These hours are available only in 10-hour increments. Call the program directors to register at least 24 hours prior to the date you are requesting service. Spaces are limited to five per day and are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. The program will tally hours used and notify you when your Flex-Time is running low. Blocks of Flex-Time are valid the first full day of school through the morning of May 30, 2008.
After-School Activities
If your child will not be joining Extended Day for his/her regularly scheduled time, or if your child will be arriving late due to activities such as Superstars, after-school recreation (ASR), chess or community service, you are responsible for notifying the directors. It is the responsibility of parents or guardians to ensure that participants in our program are delivered safely to other activities. Any requests for changes in your Extended Day schedule due to ASR enrollment must be made to the Extended Day directors within two days of receiving the ASR confirmation.
*Special note for junior kindergarten participants
Morning extended day is available for morning JK students and afternoon
extended day is available for afternoon JK students.
To Register
Download a registration
form (PDF) or call (312) 582-6089 to have one mailed to you. Thank you!
Please return a registration form for each child along with a $250 deposit before August 30, 2007. Mail the registration form and check payable to The Latin School of Chicago. Once school begins, please process applications through the program directors. The registration can be faxed to the Lower School at (312) 582-6205. Families who turn in the Extended Day registration form after the August 30th deadline will have to wait to begin the program for the three to five school days needed to process new applications. The Business Office will bill families in two installments. Your first payment will be due by September 15, 2007. This covers the first part of the school year. Your second payment, which is for the remainder of the year, is due by December 15, 2007. A late fee of one percent per month will be assessed on balances not paid by the due date.
The directors will try to accommodate changes in the days selected for Extended Day attendance given a minimum of two days notice. Because staffing schedules and costs are based on registration, no refunds can be issued. Parents are responsible for contacting their child's homeroom teacher if there will be a change in their child's Extended Day attendance.
