Latin Celebrates Lower School Graduation 6/2/2009 “You are off to great places; today is your day…” was only one of the sentiments shared with the class of 2016 as they graduated from 5th grade in the lower school gym on Friday.
Division director Sally Ott, Head of School Don Firke, and various students provided the soon-to-be middle schoolers with a thoughtful mix of advice ranging from sources as varied as first graders, to sixth graders, to Dr. Suess.
In addition to the speakers, the day was marked by poems, songs and some surprise awards. Two parent volunteers, Georgy Ann Peluchiwski and Elizabeth Chow were presented with the Edwin S. Van Gorder, III Award for outstanding service to the school. This award was established by the Alumni Association in honor of Dr. Edwin S. Van Gorder III, who served as Latin’s headmaster from 1969 to 1973. It is presented to the member(s) of the Latin community who has demonstrated extraordinary service to Latin School through volunteer effort and devotion.
