There are endless ways to volunteer for the School, and many opportunities are suitable for working parents. Whether your interest is in supporting special events, helping out with classroom needs or with school clubs, or participating in community service projects, there’s a job waiting for you!
Many volunteer opportunities are provided by The Latin School's Parents’ Council,
a parent-run volunteer organization. Some Parents' Council members serve as officers,
grade chairs, or committee members for one- or two-year terms. Open
positions are posted in December for the following school year. Parents'
Council volunteers also help in the classroom and with events such as Roman's
Run in the fall and Bazaarnival in the spring. Please see the current Parents’ Council Volunteer
Packet (PDF) for a comprehensive list of opportunities at the School this
year.
In addition to the Parents' Council functions, the School sponsors major events
that involve the entire Latin community. The Scholarship
Dinner, held every other year, raises money for the School’s scholarship
fund. Parents and other guests enjoy a unique evening beginning with cocktails
and a program at the Upper School and ending with a delightful dinner at the
home of Latin parents. Parent volunteers not only offer hospitality and creativity
as dinner hosts, but they also solicit advertising and organize this special
evening. Alternating with the Scholarship Dinner, Latin’s biannual Auction is
one of the most successful school auctions in the country. Participants enjoy
socialization, dinner, and the opportunity to bid on a wide array of exciting
auction items. Many parent volunteers are needed to solicit merchandise, set
up the display of the auction items, and otherwise bring together this spectacular
event.
Finally, parent volunteers are important to the success of Live & Learn, The Latin School’s very successful adult education program. Parents teach courses, recruit instructors, organize and write the catalogue, monitor classes, and distribute catalogues.
To express their appreciation of the parent volunteer effort, each spring the Parents’ Council presents the Volunteer of the Year awards.
So, consult your schedule, look over the possibilities, and get involved! You, your child, and the School will be glad you did!
