Young Author Visits Latin to Talk with other Children About his Book

Chicago - Fourteen-year-old Adair Gregory, author of Sugar Was My Best Food; Diabetes and Me, will talk with Middle School Latin students on Thursday, October 14. Diagnosed with diabetes five years ago, Gregory wrote the book, now in its third printing, for kids who are newly diagnosed and is intended to let them know how they might feel and what to expect.

This visit to Latin is special in that Gregory's grandparents William J. Carney and Kyle Adams Carney are Latin School alumni. This is one of Gregory's many speaking engagements across the country. He has read excerpts of his book on national Public Radio's "All things Considered," and been interviewed by Dr. Timothy Johnson on "Good Morning America." The book was reviewed in The New York Times and was listed in the Bank Street collection of Education's Best Children's Books of 1999. The book was published by Albert Whitman and Company, a Chicago-based press specializing in children's books.

Diabetes is a chronic disease that has no cure. It impacts many people under the age of 20. Early detection can lead to proper management of blood glucose levels through blood glucose monitoring, regular exercise, meal planning and attention to medical factors. Gregory will talk about how children with diabetes can lead to healthy, normal lives.

Gregory will speak to students in The Latin School Theatre, 59 W. North Blvd., from 2:50-3:15 p.m. on October 14. One-on-one interviews with the author are possible following the presentation. To arrange to talk with the young author, please contact Latin's media coordinator Cindy Bobbitt, (847) 864-8374.
