Live & Learn
Winter Session Begins
CHICAGO - The Live
& Learn adult education program at The Latin School of Chicago will kick
off its winter mini-session on January 14. Classes will be held through mid-March
and are open to the public for a fee.
Among this sessions
highlights are "How to Repair Food," on Thursday, February 7, "Crisis
Preparedness and Management Strategies," on Wednesday, February 20, and
"An Introduction to Digital Photography," on Tuesday, February 5 through
Tuesday, March 5. As usual through Live & Learn, adult students can also
choose from a variety of fun-filled dance, art, fitness and language classes.
Instructors donate
their time and resources to Live & Learn and proceeds from the program are
gifted to The Latin School in support of scholarship programs.
Depending on space
availability, registration for all courses is open until the day of class. To

The following is
a selection of classes that should have openings at press time:
Introduction to
Flamenco Dancing
Date: Thursdays, January 24-February 28, 6-7pm (6 Classes)
Course Fee: $90 per person Location: DanceArt Studio located in the South Fieldhouse
Building of Lincoln Park Learn the basic techniques and styles of this beautiful,
ethnic dance which is rooted in the traditions of Seville in southern Spain.
Students will learn the braceo (arm and hand movement), taconeo (footwork),
and palmas (rhythmic hand clapping) all of which are characteristic of flamenco
dancing.
Adult, Child, and
Infant CPR
Date: Tuesdays, January 29, February 5 & 12 6:30-8:30 p.m. (2 or 3 Classes)
Course Fee: $35 for two nights; $45 for three nights Lab Fee: $ 15
Location: Latin Upper School
Certified CPR instructor Petra Anderson will teach such lifesaving techniques
as rescue breathing, determining unconsciousness, clearing an obstructed airway,
performing one-rescuer CPR, and Automated External Defibrillation (AED). Those
taking the three-night class will learn how to apply these procedures specifically
to infants and children. A certificate valid for one year will be issued upon
completion of both the two-night and three-night sessions.
The Artist's Way
Date: Thursdays, January 31-March 7, 7-9 p.m. (6 Classes)
Course Fee: $150 Location: 4414 N. Manor Lane
Artist Barbara Yonan will be your guide for this six-week creative journey which
will include painting, mask making, guided imagery, and journaling. Get in touch
with the artist within yourself and learn to express your creativity more fully
in all aspects of your life.
Mother Daughter
Self-Defense
Date: Saturdays, February 2 & 9, 2:30-4 p.m. (2 Classes)
Course Fee: $50 per pair Location: Peace School, 3121 N. Lincoln Avenue
Learn basic self-defense techniques in this hands-on class for beginners conducted
by a female martial arts instructor. The class will focus on basic strategies
for self-protection appropriate for young and adult women. Jennifer Kim of the
Peace School will teach you practical and effective defense moves and help you
develop the confident attitude and peaceful mind that are essential tools in
any self-defense situation. Daughters must be at least 9 years old.
Beginning Digital
Photography
Date: Tuesdays, February 5-March 5, 6-7:30 p.m. (5 Classes)
Course Fee: $90 Location: Latin Upper School
Professional photographer Kelly McKinnell will show you how to use a digital
camera. Learn how to compose pictures and work with light. McKinnell will discuss
selecting appropriate subject matter, the pros and cons of digital vs. 35mm,
and using digital images as art. You will learn to download images onto the
computer and use Adobe PhotoShop to manipulate and print your pictures.
How to Repair Food
Date: Thursday, February 7, 6-7:30 p.m. Course Fee: $30 Lab Fee: $10
Location: Latin Upper School
If you have problems with your meals always turning out overcooked, undercooked,
burned, lumpy, too spicy, too mushy, too dry, too wet, too flat, too tough,
too thick, too thin, wilted, fatty, collapsed, or curdled, then this is the
class for you. Let food consultant Wilbert Jones come to your rescue and answer
your failed food questions. Learn the cooking tricks that can help you prevent
culinary disasters.
Bread Baking Made
Simple
Date: Saturday, February 9, 10 am-noon Course Fee: $30 Lab Fee: $15
Location: A private home
Chef Kocoa, former food correspondent for WGN and author of Cooking With Love,
will demonstrate how to master simple, but luscious traditional Scottish oat
bannocks (scones), apple beignets, and the ever popular cheddar cheese crackers.
Crisis Preparedness
and Management Strategies
Date: Wednesday, February 20, 6-8 p.m. Course Fee: $30
Location: Latin Upper School
Disaster can strike quickly and without warning. You may be forced to evacuate
your neighborhood or find yourself confined to your home. How would you cope
if basic services such as water, gas, electricity, or telephone were cut off?
American Red Cross Community Disaster Educator Paul Ruiz will advise participants
on how to protect themselves and deal with such crises by planning ahead. Ruiz
will provide an emergency preparedness checklist and help to create a personal
family disaster plan.
