Young Poets Slam at Latin

The Latin School of Chicago will host its second annual Interscholastic Team Poetry Slam at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, March 2, 2001. Oak Park & River Forest and New Trier high schools have been invited to send two teams each to participate in the main on-stage event.

Following slam tradition, the young poets will each have three minutes to perform their most creative, evocative, or meaningful original work. A panel of Chicago area teachers and writers will judge the performances, and the team with the most points wins. Students will also be encouraged to take the stage individually for an open mic contest.

The winning team will be awarded a $75 prize. And top-scoring poets will go on to compete in the Chicago-wide, Teen Slam sponsored by the Writing Teachers Collective in April.
A highlight of this year’s slam will be a musical performance by local singer/songwriter Dan Darrah—described as a solo Dave Matthews meets Cat Stevens with a bit of salsa and hip hop thrown in.

The public is welcome. Admission is $3 for students and $5 for adults. For more information, call Upper School Service Learning Program Director Billy Lombardo, (312) 573-4575.
