On Friday, September 22 grandparents (or special friends) of first through fifth graders at The Latin School of Chicago will be returning to the classroom for a day.
As part of its Grandparents and Special Friends Day, Latin’s Lower School (1531 North Dearborn Parkway) has invited grandparents and special friends to participate in arts and crafts projects, musical performances, and other classroom activities. This event will give grandparents—most of whom rarely witness the day-to-day lives of their grandchildren—the opportunity to gain an insider’s view of what it’s like to be a Latin student. Kindergarten guests, for example, will be assigned to write a book with their grandchildren about school. In the third grade, students and guests will make picture frames. Fourth grade visitors will be working on elementary geometry with their young friends. Grandparents and special friends will also take a music class in which they will be taught the chorus to a song that they will perform with their grandchildren during an assembly.
"Grandparents and Special Friends Day is a unique bonding opportunity for the generations," said Lower School Director Linda Hennelly. "It's a chance for the younger generation to learn something from their elders, and for our older guests to learn something from the students."
While the day is meant to be an opportunity for grandparents and grandchildren to spend some time together, it is also intended to honor the integral role of grandparents in the fabric of family life and to serve as a reminder to children that their grandparents are valuable sources of strength, wisdom, and guidance.
The event will kick off with a coffee reception at the Lower School at 9 a.m., followed by classroom activities from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Additional classroom activities are scheduled from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. for the grandparents and special friends of children enrolled in the afternoon session of the Junior Kindergarten class.
