Live & Learn Fall 2000 Session Kicks Off
CHICAGO - The Live & Learn program at The Latin School of Chicago will kick
off its Fall 2000 session on September 25, offering nearly 250 adult education
classes. The classes will be held
through mid-December and are open to the public for a fee.
This session's
courses include a host of unique offerings including "Great Short Fiction:
A Working Person's Book Club," beginning September 28, "A Career
in TV/Online Journalism: The Real
Story," on October 12, "Socially Responsible Investing," on October
19, and "Gingerbread Houses at the Chicago Children's Museum,"
on December 16.
Instructors donate
their time and resources to Live & Learn and proceeds from the program are
gifted to The Latin School in support of scholarship and faculty grant programs.
Registration for
all courses is currently underway and depending on availability and space, is

How Deep is the Deep Tunnel?
Date: Thursday, October 12, 5:30-9 pm, 1 Class, Course Fee: $30
Location: Meet in the lobby of 100 E. Erie Street Lab Fee: $15
Join us for this spectacular tour of the Deep Tunnel project with Commissioner
PATRICIA YOUNG of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago.
Descend into the
Mainstream Pumping Station and explore this massive project that helped to stem
the now infamous Chicago Flood. Learn how the Deep Tunnel helps control the
pollution of Chicago's waterways.
See what millions of dollars and years of work have produced. Because there
is no food service available, we suggest that you bring along a sandwich to
enjoy on the bus.
This Ain't Gary: A Tour of A. Finkl & Sons
Date: Tuesday, October 10, 6:30-8 pm, 1 Class, Course Fee: $30
Location: A. Finkl & Sons, 2000 N. Southport Street
Just like in the moviesgiant furnaces spewing molten steel while sparks
fly in the darkness. See this incredible process as it occurs at A. FINKL &
SONS Chicago steel-manufacturing facility. Learn
how scrap metal is recycled and watch it being forged into industrial products
on this unique, behind-the-scenes tour.
Witness the Flight of the Cranes
Date: Saturday, November 4, 2:30-5 pm, 1 Class, Course Fee: $30
Location: Near Rensselaer, Indiana Lab Fee: $15
Venture into Indiana to see the spectacular fall migration of thousands of Sandhill
cranes at their most popular stopover. Begin the day with a visit to the Nature
Conservancy's Prairie Border
Preserve, where you'll see cranes feeding and learn about their rescue
from near extinction. Then, you'll drive to Jasper-Pulaski Fish and Wildlife
Area in time to watch thousands of these
magnificent creatures return to the preserve for the night. These are sights
you'll never forget! Bring a bag lunch. Driving instructions will be available
upon registrationtravel time from Chicago is
about two hours. The tour will take place rain or shine. Sorry, no refunds.

Gingerbread Houses at the Chicago Childrens' Museum
Date: Sunday, December 16, 3-4:30 pm, 1 Class, Course Fee: $30 per family
Lab Fee: $45 per family
Location: Chicago Children's Museum, Navy Pier, meet in the waterfront
classroom
Celebrate the holiday season with a family gingerbread decorating workshop at
Chicago Children's Museum. Visit the Gingerbread Fantasy Factory exhibit,
then create your own gingerbread
masterpiece to take home. This facilitated workshop includes a fresh gingerbread
house with frosting and candies for decorating. Bring some special items from
home to give your creation a personal
touch. A family consists of three to eight participants. The lab fee covers
one gingerbread house per family. If you would like an additional house, the
cost will be $35 more.
Decoding 20th Century Art: No Manual Required
Date: Tuesdays, October 17-31, 7-8:30 pm (lecture); 6-8 pm (tours), 3 Classes,

Learning to look at and understand modern and contemporary art is a challenging
but rewarding pursuit. Join art historian ALYSSA WEISS, an M.A. in Art History
and Museum Studies, for this
three-part seminar that promises to provide the tools necessary to interpret
and enjoy the ground-breaking works of the 20th century. The meeting at The
Latin School will provide an introduction
to the major movements, vocabulary, and tools for making modern art accessible.
Then, you will move out of the classroom to explore the galleries of The Art
Institute of Chicago and The Museum
of Contemporary Art.
Socially Responsible Investing
Date: Thursday, October 19, 6:30-8 pm, 1 Class, Course Fee: $30

How do you invest in a socially responsible way? Do you want to increase your

A Career in TV/On-line Journalism: The Real Story

Does a career in television sound exciting and glamorous? It's not all
about meeting celebrities. A bathroom is not available for television reporters
at the site of a plane crashthere's no glamour in
that! Let Tribune Internet Producer CHRISTINE BADOWSKI give you the inside scoop
on this sometimes exciting, sometimes mundane profession. She will share with
you her experiences in
journalism that span print, radio, television, and new media.
Fitness Boot Camp
Date: Tuesdays and/or Thursdays, September 26-November 16, 8 or 16 Classes,
6-7 Course Fee: $ 80 (8 classes), $160 (16 classes) Location: Meet in The Latin
School lobby.
Get fit or stay fit with Elite Force Fitness, Chicago's original boot-camp
style physical fitness training program. During this eight-week course, conducted
outdoors in Lincoln Park east of the
Chicago Historical Society, enjoy working out with a motivated team under the
fitness leadership of former Marine drill sergeants and personal trainers. You
will build strength, increase
cardiovascular endurance, and improve your physical well-being during workouts
that blend stretching, cardio drills, and calisthenics strength training. Each
class offers a different workout. Whether
in shape or just starting to workout, you will experience great results in this
fun and upbeat training environment.
Urban Rebounding
Date: Tuesday, September 26-November 14, 5:30-6:30 pm, 8 Classes, Course Fee:
$80

Urban rebounding is a cardiovascular conditioning class that uses a mini-trampoline.
This intense workout is a powerful, high-energy class that will emphasize the
push down into the trampoline as
well as the plyometric lift offin a safe manner. A real challenge!
Fitness Walking for You and Fido!
Date: Tuesday, September 26-November 14, 8-9 am, 8 Classes, Course Fee: $80
Location: Meet at the corner of North Avenue & Clark Streetinclement

Now that the "dog days of summer" are over, it's time to walk
you and your dog into shape. If you have a well-behaved dog, this is the perfect
exercise class for the two of you. Let a certified trainer
teach you cardio, strength, and flexibility tips as well as how to get resultsand
when you can expect to see them. With your canine companion as your workout
partner, you're sure to keep on
track.
