Local Student Brings Ballet to Foster Children at DCFS (12/16/98)
Thalia Aurinko-Mostow, a tenth-grade student at The Latin School of Chicago, will bring her class of foster children from the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) to the Wrigley Theatre at Latin on Saturday, December 19th to perform the Nutcracker. The children are part of the "Pathways to Development" program sponsored by Ballet Chicago.

High Jump Program Helps Children Prepare for High School-Application Deadline Set for January 29, 1999 (12/15/98)
Applications are now being accepted for the High Jump program, a free program that helps prepare academically talented students with limited opportunities for acceptance and success at selective high schools. The application process is open to all sixth grade students, and applications must be received by January 29, 1999. The program, housed at The Latin School, provides academic and social enrichment courses to 80 middle schoolers each year.

Nationally Ranked Santia Jackson Scores the 1,000th Point of Her Career (12/14/98)
Latin School Senior Santia Jackson scored the one thousandth point of her career last Friday, December 11th. This landmark record is rarely broken during a high school girl's basketball career and demonstrates Santia's remarkable ability, especially at school Latin's size.

Students Recreate the Nuremberg Trials at the Daley Center (11/30/98)
On December 6th, sophomores in The Latin School of Chicago's "Nazi Mind" class will recreate the Nuremberg Trials in an actual courtroom at the Daley Center in an all-day presentation. Students will play the role of either a member of the tribunal, a prosecuting attorney, a defense attorney, or a defendant in order to better understand the issues presented during the actual trials which took place over 50 years ago.

Nationally Ranked Santia Jackson Starts 1998-99 Season at Latin's Thanksgiving Tournament (11/17/98)
Latin School Senior Santia Jackson begins her last season as a high school basketball player before heading off to Georgetown University, where she has signed to play women's basketball. The second annual Thanksgiving Tournament will be held on November 23rd with Santia playing at 6:00 p.m., November 24th at 6:00 p.m., and November 25th at 2:30 p.m. at The Latin School of Chicago in the Upper School Field Gym.

Sammy Sosa and Harry Caray Reunite as Teachers at The Latin School Celebrate Halloween Sosa Style (10/29/98)
Latin School teachers of junior kindergarten through fifth grade treat their students-one teacher will dress up like Sammy Sosa in a Cubs uniform, others will dress like the baseballs that Sammy hit out of the park, and one teacher will dress like Harry Caray. All teacher's and student's costumes will be shown in Latin's traditional Halloween parade.

Latin School Kindergarten Students Give Their Ideas of Thanksgiving Recipes, Making Many Thankful--That They're Not Cooking! (10/23/98)
Kindergarten students at The Latin School of Chicago are offering some of their recipes for Thanksgiving dinner, but many warn not to try these at home!

Latin School Teacher Presents Session on Fractals at National Middle School Association Conference in Denver (10/23/98)
Latin School teacher of 6th and 7th grade math, Tom Canright, has recently returned from the National Middle School Association conference in Denver. While attending the conference he presented a session entitled "Generating a Fractal in a Middle School Classroom" to 60 middle school teachers from around the nation.

Local Teacher Lets Public Star Gaze for Good Cause and Stirs Up City Action (10/16/98)
Dennis Erickson, a science teacher at The Latin School of Chicago, appears at Clark Street and North Avenue, allowing passersby to catch a close-up view of Jupiter and Saturn through his Meade telescope. In order to take a peek, Erickson asks passersby only for a small donation--even a nickel--which goes to his cause: the reduction of light pollution.

Local Student Kent Farrington Wins Coveted A.H.S.A. National Championship (10/14/98)
On October 11, 1998, Kent Farrington, a senior at The Latin School of Chicago, won the American Horse Show Association National Championship by beating 217 other contestants who qualified for the tournament which was held in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
