Welcome to The Latin School of Chicago's Monthly Electronic Update
Dear Latin Community,
Welcome to The Latin School's inaugural e-newsletter! This monthly communication is designed to keep you up-to-date on school-wide news and events, with information on everything from arts and sports to events and student/faculty accomplishments. A calendar will run alongside the newsletter each month, serving as a reminder of some of the upcoming important dates at Latin.
You will receive this e-mail in the middle of each month, and it will replace the paper calendar previously sent to you in the mail. If you have any comments or questions about the newsletter, please feel free to contact Latin's Communications Department at info@latinschool.org. We hope that you find this new communication both informative and helpful in planning for future events at the school.
Best regards,
The Latin Communications Team

Field Project Update Over the summer, Latin continued to work with the Chicago Park District on a plan to construct a synthetic turf field in Lincoln Park. This project was one of the main topics discussed at the school's regularly-scheduled community meeting on August 23. At this time, bids on constructing the field have been received from several developers and are currently being reviewed by both Latin and the Park District. The school is also in the midst of planning a meeting with the neighborhood aldermen and the Park District to discuss the feedback received at the community meeting. For more information, check the community page on our Web site.
Farewell to Live & Learn After 37 wonderful
years of Live & Learn, fall 2007 will mark the final semester for
this very special program. The decision was a difficult one and
required a great deal of consideration. Thank you the
instructors, students and parent volunteers who made Live &
Learn such a tremendous success. Your generous support of the program
and The Latin School of Chicago brought exciting and unique educational
opportunities to adults throughout the greater Chicagoland area.
Faculty Members Join the Latin Community Several new faculty members joined Latin in August, and the school is pleased to welcome them to our community. To learn more about these new additions to our school, please visit Latin Today.
Office of Multicultural Affairs Frankie Brown, Dean of Multicultural Affairs, wants students to "Show Off Your Neighborhood" in an online gallery of photos. Digital images are preferred, but not required, to participate. The gallery is open to everyone. Please provide first name, zip code and name of neighborhood, if applicable. E-mail images to oma@latinschool.org or drop off at US 318 (photos will not be returned).

RECENT EVENTS
Hands-on Education Using only wheelbarrows, pick axes and shovels, sixteen Latin students, led by faculty members Scott Eastman and Nicole Collias, helped build a new classroom in Ngore Ngore, Kenya this summer. The members of Latin's Youth in Action club raised $13,000 for the project and spent 18 days working in the African town, eight hours by car from Nairobi. When they weren't mixing concrete by hand or digging the new classroom's foundation, the students were building relationships with local students and residents. View a QuickTime movie slideshow of the project on Latin's Web site. The trip was such a success, that several members of the group have already expressed an interest in participating in another similar trip. Youth in Action kicks off its fundraising campaign in October with its third annual dodgeball tournament.
