Soccer: Sectional Champs!
May 23, 2006, 16:16
The girls soccer team is going to the state quarterfinals on Friday in Naperville after doing what no Latin girls soccer team has ever managed to do: Win a sectional championship.
Latin scored two of its three goals from senior stand-out Emily Maynard serving up perfect dishes to junior forward Lizzie Schink, who capitalized with speed and flair. Sophomore Katie Shatto scored the second goal with an assist from classmate Marie Zaro, a perfect shot from about 20 yards out. Latin went into the half with a 2-point lead.
Behind a strong defense, sophomore Eileen Vogl added a confident, steady presence in the goal while notching another shut-out in the 3-0 win over Timothy Christian in the Class A Loyola University sectional championship on Monday afternoon.
Coach Tom Bower praised his team for clean, accurate passing and for taking control of the midfield throughout the game.
The Romans are 19-1-1 going into their first state tournament appearance in school history. They will face Princeton at 4 p.m. Friday, May 26, at North Central College in Naperville. Princeton advanced by beating Bloomington’s Central Catholic.
