US Math teacher Stan Izen’s article, “Dandelin Spheres,” was published last August in the Mathematics Teacher.

Honors

A book to which US History and Social Studies teacher Cynthia Jurisson contributed a lengthy article, The Encyclopedia of Women and Religion in North America, has received the 2006 Leland Prize from the American Historical Association as the best research tool of the year.

Second grade teacher Jennifer Griffith received a fellowship from the Earthwatch Institute, a non-profit organization that supports scientific research by offering volunteers the opportunity to join research teams around the world. Griffith will travel to Canada in September to monitor mammal populations to help determine the potential impact of climate and other environmental changes.

Jen (Evers) Shakeshaft, member of the US language department, was named an Educator of Distinction by the National Society of High School Scholars. The award requires a nomination from a member of the student organization and goes to educators who work hard to make a difference in the lives of students.

Third grade teacher Bryan Jackson received a study grant from Alterra Global Initiatives to travel to South Africa in a program designed to inspire participants to become involved in the organization’s literacy, health, life skills and poverty reduction efforts.

Upper School art teacher Russell Harris won first place in the Great Frame Up's LISA Show, "Talent that Teaches” contest in May.

Other Professional Development Activities

In September, PE Department Chair Scott Eastman attended the American Swim Coaches Association's World Clinic in Washington, D.C.

Registrar Brendan O’Toole attended "Legal Aspects of Student Records" and "Digital Games, Simulations, and Virtual Worlds in the Classroom" at the Illinois Technology Conference for Educators in February in St. Charles, IL.
