Latin has nearly completed its design for a better world, with students, faculty, staff and volunteers wrapping up work on the school’s own “Cool Globe.” Part of a project sponsored by the city of Chicago, the globe is one of 100 five-foot spheres designed by local artists to promote solutions to global warming.

Students submitted approximately 40 possible designs for Latin’s Cool Globe, and the final project represents a combination of ideas. A stack of books, which serves as the base of the globe, conveys the message that education is the foundation for addressing global warming. Latin's plan of action includes a series of 10 "lessons" which are written on chalkboards circling the globe. The lessons include: ride a bike, carpool, recycle, use less water, take the bus, use less paper, reuse containers, unplug, plant more and walk more. Behind the chalkboards, the globe is covered in sunflowers which the students learned act as natural sponges to pollution in the environment and help purify the air. The finished globe is the result of many long hours designing and painting by students, faculty, staff and volunteers.

All of the Cool Globes, including Latin’s piece, will be on display along the Chicago lakefront during the summer. Currently in the works is a miniature version of the project, which will serve as a table centerpiece at the opening event for the entire exhibit.
