There's a wooden support column in the lobby of Little Brothers – Friends of the Elderly, festooned with cards and letters sent by seniors whom the organization has lifted from their isolation and loneliness through its many programs.
“I must tell you all that I love my new bedding,” reads a thank-you card from Betty, aged 81. “I sleep so good now and no more back pain! It’s just what I needed.”
Betty’s gift was made possible by LBFE’s Christmas Gift Program and cooperating organizations like The Latin School.
The LBFE Christmas gift program was a complete success, resulting in the acquisition, wrapping and delivery of nearly 800 individualized gifts to elders who are in much need of recognition, personal contact and joy at this emotional time of year.
The Latin School employees took time from their own hectic holiday schedules to purchase and deliver 50 gifts to 355 N. Ashland, the Chicago Chapter facility.
LBFE volunteers and Program Coordinators begin the process early in the year, observing and compiling a list of the special wants and needs of each of the seniors. They can do this, because of how well they know their “old friends.” They then appeal to charitable organizations and individuals to donate the gifts – everything from sweat socks to winter coats to theatre tickets.
“We couldn’t do this without the generous support of extraordinary people like those from The Latin School,” says project leader Christine Bertrand. “They have helped make Christmas special for the nearly 1,000 elders that we serve. Many of them added personal notes and little extras to the packages. They should know what very personal joy they have brought to our Old Friends, as well as the delight they’ve given to our volunteers who get to witness the seniors’ unwrapping and enjoyment of those gifts.”
For over 47 years, the Chicago Chapter of Little Brothers – Friends of the Elderly has worked to relieve isolation and loneliness among the elderly. LBFE’s year-round programs are free to all who qualify, and include one-one-one visiting programs and regular gatherings (“Celebrations of Life”). Volunteers and donations are always welcome.
