After a long and thoughtful interview process, The Latin School is pleased to announce the appointment of Ted Graf as the director of the Upper School, effective July 1st. We were fortunate to have had a very impressive group of candidates with outstanding credentials and experience. This decision was the result of a collaborative process between faculty and administration which included many people sharing their impressions, observations and input.
Mr. Graf has had a broad range of experience. Most recently he has served as the head of the Gailer School in Vermont. Previously he was the assistant head and Upper School head of the Watkinson School in West Hartford, Connecticut. While at Gailer and Watkinson, Ted also served for six years on the Executive Board of the National Coalition of Essential Schools, including four years as the board president. His career also includes eight years as an English and Humanities teacher at Heathwood Hall Episcopal School in Columbia, South Carolina and three years as an English teacher and soccer coach at The Chinquapin School in Highlands, Texas.
In his statement of educational philosophy, Mr. Graf provided a strong indication of what he will bring to Latin when he wrote, "Great teachers...are at the heart of great schools. The great schools I have witnessed celebrate and appreciate those teachers who spark moments of discovery for the students, and the school expects those same teachers to ask questions about how students learn best and adjust their teaching accordingly. Teachers in those schools are afforded the respect and the responsibility of adjusting or improving their own practice. As a leader, this means that I must seek out ways to nurture and model reflective practice and create an atmosphere where pedagogical and curricular innovation can occur."
We look forward to working with Mr. Graf as he brings his vision, ideas and energy to his work here at Latin.
