The Latin School is the only Class A school from Chicago to send a team to the state girls soccer tournament.

Their barrage on the Princeton goalie on Friday might suggest that they intend to make the city proud.

Latin advanced to a state semi-final game by beating a tough Princeton team, 5-2, in the third game of the day at the Class A state tournament at North Central College in Naperville. Playing on a perfect afternoon under hotter conditions than they are used to, the girls got off to an early start, scoring just 53 seconds into the match. That goal by Lizzie Schink was the lone score until Margaret Wardrop offered up another goal at the 11:24 mark. Princeton answered with a goal of its own less than a minute later.

Latin never trailed.

Emily Maynard, who will play division I soccer in the strong Atlantic Coast Conference for Maryland in the fall, put Latin further ahead with another goal before the half ended at 3-1, and then scored again just 2 minutes and 10 seconds into the second half.

Latin scored its final goal with 16 minutes left in the competition, a shot by Alex Vacin. The team gave up a penalty kick to Princeton, who capitalized on the opportunity, nearly four minutes later.

Eileen Vogl was credited with two saves. Princeton’s goalie got five. Latin earned six corner kicks to Princeton’s one. Katie Shatto notched the only assist of the game in this tremendous team effort, Latin soccer’s first appearance in a state tournament.

Latin will play in the second semi-final game on Saturday, May 27, at 11 a.m., against the Rockford Lutheran team, a 2-1 double overtime winner over Rochester. The first game, at 9 a.m., will feature a match-up between Columbia, today’s 2-0 winner over Hampshire, and Lutheran from Decatur, who won 1-0 in overtime over Herscher.

The third place game will be played at 5 p.m. and the state championship match commences at 7 p.m.

Go Romans!

MAY 27 MID-AFTERNOON UPDATE: The Romans are playing for the state championship! Be there at 7 p.m. tonight to see the Romans, 4-2 winners over Rockford Lutheran, meet Columbia, 5-0 winners over Decatur Lutheran.

In the 11 a.m. semifinal match today, it was a senior scoring sensation as Emily Maynard scored a hat trick and Stephanie King added a goal to earn a date to play for the state championship.
