The boys water polo season ended just the way the sports pundits have predicted all season that it would, with a match-up between Fenwick and Latin for the state championship, and Fenwick coming out on top.
But what a season!
Congratulations to the team for making it to the state championship game on Saturday, May 13, and for finishing second after a wonderful 21 and 4 season. The championship game loss to Fenwick, 5-19, marked Fenwick’s third consecutive state title. Fenwick finished at 35-0 for the season.
Latin left no doubt that it wanted to be in the state tournament for the third consecutive year when it beat St. Ignatius, 14-5, in the sectional title game at UIC on May 5, after besting Lincoln Park, 23-6, and Von Steuben, 15-9. Grant Wilkie led the team with 6 goals in the sectional championship.
On to the state tournament.
Latin’s first state tournament match was a fairly easy 15-7 win over Palatine on Thursday afternoon. Jordan Himmel, Sam Kettlewell, and Grant Wilkie combined for 11 of Latin’s 15 goals in the quarterfinal win.
And then there were four.
In Saturday morning’s semi-final match-up against Lyons, the Romans dug themselves an early hole when Lyons scored on the opening possession. Latin trailed 0-3 going into the second period, and 3-5 at the end of the half.
But the Romans never gave up, and the game proceeded in see-saw fashion, with the Romans always playing catch-up except when it counted most.
With 2:40 left in the game, Lyons scored to break a 10-10 tie, but Latin’s Grant Wilkie answered almost immediately. The next two minutes were a furious battle, but with 11 seconds left, Tim Wickes scored the winning goal, preserved by a spectacular Henry Fyfe save in goal with just 3 seconds left in the game. Latin won, 12-11. (Scoring: Grant Wilkie-5; Jordan Himmel-4; Tim Wickes, Sam Kettlewell, and Stephen Wickes, one each.)
And then there were two. And they had to play later that day. Right before prom.
Latin, with approximately 420 students to Fenwick’s nearly 1200, was well-prepared for this game, if a bit tired from the early morning match.
The Romans stayed in the fast-paced game throughout the first half. Latin grabbed the early lead on senior Jordan Himmel’s goal, but this was to be Latin’s only lead in the game. The second half belonged to the Friars.
Lyons beat Mundelein for third place.
Congratulations to the entire team, consisting of seniors Michael Allen, Ryan Arvin, Henry Fyfe, Dan Greenblatt, Jordan Himmel, Sam Kettlewell, and Stephen Wickes; sophomores Conor Allen, Tim Barry, Jeff Hansen, Andrew MacKinnon, Max Malec, Giancarlo Pasquesi, Tim Wickes, and Grant Wilkie; and freshmen J.P. Brandstetter, Andrew Davis, Sam Hirshman, Sam Kersten, and Graham Peigh, as well as coaches Vaughan Smith and Scott Eastman.
