Dr. Jeffrey Walkington, current assistant headmaster and head of the upper school at the Cannon School near Charlotte, North Carolina, will become Latin’s next Vice President of Academic Affairs in July. He takes over the position formerly held by Dr. John Love.

“I am looking forward to working with Latin's top-notch leaders, faculty, and staff,” Walkington said. “I have always admired Latin from afar and have always considered it one of the best independent schools in the country.”

Dr. Walkington began his career in education nearly 20 years ago, teaching English literature and composition to high school and community college students in Knoxville, Tennessee. He then worked at Knoxville’s Webb School as its Writing Center director, director of public relations, and coordinator of curriculum and research. In 1998, he joined Cannon’s faculty as its founding upper school head.

Walkington grew up in the Midwest. He earned his bachelor’s degree summa cum laude in English and French from DePauw University. He earned his master’s and doctoral degrees in English from the University of Tennessee, where he was the recipient of prestigious fellowships for exceptional scholarship and professional promise.

”Professionally and personally, this is a wonderful opportunity for me and my family. I am proud and humbled to have an opportunity to be at Latin,” Walkington said. “My family members all live either in Chicago or in the Bloomington area, so we will be able to live close to home for the first time since leaving college. We've always been excited by the cultural activities of Chicago.”

“Jeff brings with him great enthusiasm for the power of education, a collaborative approach to working and learning, and a wonderfully personable and candid personal style,” said Latin’s Head of School Donald W. Firke, in making the announcement to parents and faculty. “His vast experience in curriculum development, planning, and implementation in the JK through grade twelve school, as well as his commitment to and expertise in professional development for faculty, make him an excellent fit with Latin’s mission to be one of the finest independent schools in the country.”
