Criteria for Admission

The Latin School of Chicago seeks to admit highly qualified students who will contribute positively to the Latin community. The Latin School of Chicago has been and continues to be committed to the principles of equal opportunity. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, ancestry, color, religion, national origin, age, gender, sexual orientation or mental or physical disability in violation of the law.

The following are among the criteria that the admissions committee considers when making its admission decisions:

For junior kindergarten applicants:

  • developmental readiness
  • nursery school teacher recommendations

For senior kindergarten through fifth grade applicants:

  • academic record
  • how the candidate compares to others applying for admission
  • admission testing, interview and candidate visit.
For sixth through twelfth grade applicants:
  • academic record
  • admission testing, interview, and candidate visit
  • involvement in scholastic and extracurricular activities
  • personal qualities, such as intellectual curiosity, responsibility, leadership, school citizenship, and integrity

Admissions Selections Process
Using the foregoing criteria, the admissions committee makes one of three
decisions: (1) admit, (2) wait list, or (3) deny.

Among qualified candidates, The Latin School gives preference for admission to
applicants who are siblings of current students or who are children of alumni or
faculty, provided the family has been a supportive member of the school community.

The typical entry points to the school are junior kindergarten, grade six and grade
nine. The availability of space in any given year in other grades is less certain, as it is
tied to attrition of current students. Please contact the Admissions Office if you have any
questions about the availability of space.
