at Latin emphasize physical fitness through exercise and conditioning; good sportsmanship
in both winning and losing situations; teamwork, respect, and fair play; and skill

Every student will take the equivalent of at least three years of Physical Education in the Upper School. Traditional PE classes, dance classes, and participation on interscholastic teams may fulfill this requirement. Both classes and team participation offer the opportunity to learn new sports, develop athletic skills, and stay physically fit.
Athletics programs play an important role in the total education experience offered at Latin. They are one more way in which Latin helps each student realize the full range of his or her talents and abilities. Approximately 75 percent of students play on at least one interscholastic athletic team each year, and about half play on a team during any given season.
Latin is a member of the nine-school Independent School League and the Illinois High School Association, which sets interscholastic competition guidelines for member schools. Varsity teams compete in state tournaments.
The athletics program emphasizes teamwork and sportsmanship. Nevertheless, Latin teams have posted many impressive achievements throughout the schools’ long history, winning more than 40 conference championships in the last decade alone, as well a dozen regional championships. Individual athletes recently have won state titles in swimming and tennis, and state player of the year recognition in field hockey.
