All
sixth grade students take Latin at Latin. After that, it is your choice, and
you get to choose among Latin, French, Spanish, and Chinese. Every student
will take at least three years of a language, including a three-year sequence
of a single language (which may begin in Middle School).
The language program stresses all four language skills: speaking, listening comprehension,
reading comprehension, and writing, with a special emphasis placed on oral
proficiency. You will have ample opportunity to practice these skills in a
variety of real-life situations, gaining an excellent background in both grammar
and vocabulary. You will study culture and literature, practice conversations
with classmates and in the language laboratory, and go on field trips.
Each successive year of a language builds on the foundation of the previous year or years. At the completion of the third year, eligible students may enroll in the honors sequence, culminating in an Advanced Placement course during the fifth year.
If
you want to go somewhere to be immersed in the language you are studying,
you may want to consider spending a year abroad. Latin is a member school
of the School Year Abroad Program, a consortium of 23 schools that
provide their students with an opportunity to live and study for a year in
Spain, France, China, or Italy while earning home credit for their studies.
Started in 1965, SYA places approximately 60 students each fall. Normally,
a handful of students from Latin are selected to attend SYA sites each year.
