Upper School: Curriculum: English

students reading books
"Latin has an enduring commitment to active learning. This is apparent from the beginning of Upper School, when all ninth grade Humanities students not only read and analyze historical texts and great works of western literature, but they also create great art and become a theater company to perform a play."
— Upper School Director
The study of English is at the core of a Latin education, and the course offerings span the traditional and the modern. Over the four years of required courses most students will partake of both ends of the spectrum, with many in between. The expansive list of electives resembles a college catalog, so varied and focused. Each English class will help you learn to read with intelligence, to listen with sensitivity, to contribute with confidence, and to write with clarity.

Beginning with the interdisciplinary Humanities course in ninth grade, students move through a required 10th grade course and a final two years in which they choose their own paths. Most students take AP English language and composition and AP English literature and composition exams during the junior and senior years. Typically, our students' performance on these exams equals or surpasses the performance of students who take an AP English class at other schools.
