Understanding Conflict: The Vietnam/American War

Our journey will take us first to Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. We will spend two days learning more about this fascinating city through visits to significant historical and cultural sites (for example, Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum and the Hao Lo Prison, also known as the "Hanoi Hilton") and through meetings with Vietnamese war veterans. We will then travel by train to the city of Lao Cai and continue on to Sa Pa, where we will spend two days in what the French named the "Tonkinese Alps." Here we will trek along local trails and across terraced rice paddies to visit Black H'Mong and Dzay ethnic minority communities.

Next, we will travel to Hai Phong, where we will begin a two-day kayaking trip through Ha Long Bay. Our final day will be spent back in Hanoi, reflecting on all that we have seen. We will participate in at least one philanthropic activity in each city that we visit. This will include working with children at the Thanh Xuan Peace Village, who have been disabled by the use of Agent Orange, as well as visiting the Hoa Phuong Orphanage in Hai Phong.

The 13-hour flight to Seoul was not as bad as we thought! We all arrived safely in Seoul and are currently awaiting our transfer to Hanoi.

Our first day in Hanoi was spent on a largely self-guided walking tour around the city's Old Quarter. The largest challenge was avoiding the scooters and mopeds as we crisscrossed the city's markets and explored the winding streets and alleys that skirt the North and West of Hoan Kiem Lake. We had a fantastic lunch near our hotel and after a mid-afternoon siesta to help recover from our jet-lag. We ventured out again for a traditional Vietnamese dinner where we made our own spring rolls and our server serenaded us with both Vietnamese and English songs. Most of the students are staying in the hotel to catch up on some sleep now, and a few of us are headed out to try some of Hanoi's famous coconut gelato.
