Architectural Identity of Spain

Tuesday, March 13, 2007
The day starts off with a visit to the Sagrada Familia. As we walked around the exterior, the spires were reminiscent of "wet droopy sandcastles in color and formation." Compared with traditional cathedrals, it has an eccentric and surreal feel that pays attention to historical, religious, and organic details. When looking at the circular windows, the blue of the sky, against the light grey of the stone interior, was aesthetically appealing. The columns displayed an unorthodox style in that they branched off into columns that resembled trees tying into the underlying organic theme. Outside the serpents and the lizzards were a few of the decorative elements that imparted an unsettling feeling. The asymmetry of the building showed an evolution in architectural style that is representative of Barcelona. The organic nature of Gaudi's infamous unfinished work is typified by the effervescent collection of miscellaneous fruits on the top of the torrets.

Our next stop was Casa Batlló. The lack of straight lines and right angles portrays nature in a more real form. The emphasis of this particular building was marine oriented. The colors were refreshing and understated in their attempts to portray water's subtle ambiance. This building uses various mediums to express his uderwater vision.

We briefly viewed another building designed by Gaudi and then went to Park Guell that nicely concluded our day of Gaudi.
