Students will fly to Salt Lake City, where they will be picked up and taken to the trailhead in the Wasatch Mountains.
These mountains, with summits of more than 12,000 feet, receive more than 500 inches of light powder snow every year.
Their clean granite makes for world-class rock climbing while the cold nighttime temperatures and sunny days make for
superb ice and snow climbing. Students will spend the day hiking on snowshoes and learning various mountaineering
and climbing skills. While in the mountains, students will camp in tents and learn the basics of winter camping.
Throughout the week, the group will be exposed to basic mountaineering skills and be introduced to mountain travel
and safety systems. We will learn proper ice axe and crampon use, basic anchor, belay, and team rope travel, navigation,
and hazard and risk assessment skills. Conditions permitting, we will attempt climbs that will put students' new skills to
use. At the conclusion of this project, students will possess much of the basic knowledge needed for an expedition.
