This project comes from Dr. Nguyen's most recent environmental and global research, inspired by J. F. Rischard's book, High Noon: Twenty Global Problems, Twenty Years to Solve Them. We will visit the following sites: Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned; Table Mountain National Park; Victoria & Albert Waterfront; Two Oceans Aquarium; Cape Town Planetarium; South African Museum; University of Cape Town's archive; other historical and cultural sites; as well as local community centers. We'll learn about the apartheid platform, anti-apartheid movement, current social, environmental, and health issues in Cape Town, and the human geography of South Africa.

We arrived safely in Cape Town this nice and sunny Monday afternoon. Everyone is a bit jet lagged but we are already out and about exploring the Victoria & Albert Waterfront, three blocks from our hotel.

It's gorgeous here. Our contact numbers at the Breakwater Lodge are posted on our Edline page, including the country code and city codes. Kids already bought calling cards (50 Rands or $8.50 for 48 minutes) so that they can call their parents and friends from their hotel room. The surcharge per each call made from the hotel room is 2.65 Rands, or about 40 cents. Parents can call kids but it may be cheaper for kids to call parents. I think Cape Town is 7 hours ahead of Chicago.
