As we visit key museums, cathedrals, palaces, and various historic sites, we will experience first-hand why Berlin has long been a seminal center of European history. Our eight-day study focuses on four distinct periods, allowing students to experience: (1) the Berlin of the Prussian kings; (2) the Berlin of the Third Reich; (3) the Berlin of the Cold War; and (4) the Berlin that now serves as the capital of contemporary Germany.

Our study of Berlin through the Ages takes us from the German Historical Museum to Potsdam and the palace of Frederick the Great. It takes us from the Reichstag and the Chancery, significant to all who study the Third Reich, to Wannsee where the details of the final solution were hammered out. Our Cold War focus naturally leads us to Checkpoint Charlie and the remnants of the Berlin Wall, both dramatic reminders of a once-divided city. Finally, we examine the contemporary city and analyze its place in New Europe and today's globally-interconnected world. We will explore the city by boat and visit the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Jewish Museum of Berlin. We will immerse ourselves in contemporary culture as we eat in German restaurants and frequent cafes popular with German students. We also will attend at least one major sports or musical event and have an opportunity to exchange views with German high school students and their teachers.
