CHICAGO ON A BIKE

We will discover the many modern and historical treasures of Chicago from our bicycles and learn about basic bicycle maintenance at a nearby bike shop. Listed below is our basic itinerary, but we will take the opportunity to visit parks and places with interesting vistas along the way. On several occasions, official guides will help us better understand a particular site. In case of inclement weather, public transportation will be used to visit these various sites.

Everyone must have: Helmet and lock, backpack, tire tube to fit your bike, snacks and sack lunches, pencil, and paper. We suggest you also bring along: tire pump, tire irons, water bottle, and camera.

This is how we will explore on two wheels some of the wonderful things our kind of town has to offer:

Monday, March 14
After an introduction and overview of our week and a lesson on bike safety and repair, we will ride north to the storied Uptown neighborhood to tour the People's School of Music (931 W. Eastwood), visit the site of the Chicago Landmark Essanay Studios (1333 W. Argyle), (1333 W. Argyle), the Aragon Ballroom (1106 W. Lawrence), and the Riviera Theater (4746 N. Racine), and return to the Gold Coast to finish with a visit to the Lincoln Park Zoo.

Tuesday, March 15
Today we journey south to Hyde Park where we will tour Frank Lloyd Wright's Robie House (5757 S Woodlawn Ave), have a bag lunch at the University of Chicago's Reynolds Club, and then tour the Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago (1155 E. 58th St.) and the Seminary Coop Bookstore.

Wednesday, March 16
Today we travel north of the city to tour the Bahai Temple (100 Linden at Sheridan Rd, Wilmette) in the morning. We'll spend the afternoon touring Northwestern University in Evanston. We'll take a spin through Loyola University's Lakeshore Campus before returning to school.

Thursday, March 17
Our morning will be spent at the South Shore Cultural Center (7059 South Shore Drive) and then we'll ride up to the Museum of Science and Industry where we will see the Human Body movie at the Omnimax theater and tour the Human Body exhibit.

Friday, March 18
Today will be an easier riding day. We begin by watching the great bicycling movie, Breaking Away, at school. Then we'll venture down to Millennium Park, lunch in Chinatown, and use our afternoon to explore Chinatown before returning to school.
