This project offers a basic introduction to the various techniques, styles, and musical forms of Flamenco Dance. Students learn the interaction of footwork, music, and rhythms called compas, ritmos, palmas, cante, and zapateado. Two or three classes are offered daily emphasizing the rhythmic combinations of dances from the Cante Chico. Students experience the culture of the gypsies from Andalucia (Spain's most southern region) through the Flamenco style of dance, view cultural videotapes, and will listen to recordings of Spanish singers and flamenco Spanish guitarists. One day during the week, we will have a taste of Spanish cuisine at the Café Ba-Ba-Reeba restaurant and afterwards experience the artistry of a Spanish guitarist in a live performance and lecture. Finally, we will videotape the combinations of dances learned from the Cante Chico as our final project and we may present this in a live assembly.
