Our trip began in Little Rock, Arkansas, where we visited Little Rock Central High School and brought us to five other southern cities. Our mission was twofold: to embark on a modified pilgrimage to explore the sites, sounds, and images while studying the nonviolent, direct action of the Civil Rights Movement in the South, and to discover the blues heritage in the Mississippi Delta and its unique influences rooted in jazz, R&B, rock and roll, and popular music.

Our journey took us from Little Rock to Memphis, Tennessee; Jackson, Mississippi; Selma, Montgomery, and Birmingham, Alabama; and Atlanta, Georgia; before flying home to Chicago. Our early stop in Memphis gave us the opportunity to visit the National Civil Rights Museum built on the site of the Lorraine Motel, where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968. The exhibits helped orient us to what our week would reveal. We also explored nearby Beale Street, acknowledged home of the Blues.
