The Basic Audio Recording project steam-rolled ten students from acoustics, through electronic audio theory, into effects, processing, multi-track recording, sampling, mixing and distribution in a week.

Mr Ken Bowen, Latin's Technical director and Lindsay Jones, award winning sound designer spent the first day explaining and demonstrating sound and audio theory. We covered sound mixers, effects, digital and analogue techniques, microphones, room acoustics, and many other topics. It should be noted that in 7 hours of lecture-demonstration not one student fell asleep, so we now know it's possible. In the second day the students experimented with sampling and looping and made music and ambient sound collages. The third day was an introduction to Q-Studios where the students planned the recording of their music and learned about the daunting economics of the music business. On day four the songs were "tracked" or recorded one instrument at a time and day five was spent recording additional parts and "mixing-down" the result. Each student ended up with a CD of their collective work with credits and liner art.
