| Surrealists in Paris |
We saw the artwork of the Symbolists and Dadaists, who were influential to the Surrealists: Gustave Moreau Museum, Musee d'Orsay. While reading Nadja, an antinovel by Andre Breton (the writer of the Surrealists' manifesto), we strolled through the cafes frequented by the Surrealist poets and painters; Le Deux Magots, the apartment of Apollianaire, and the small gallery that gave the Surrealists their break!
We spent one morning at the Dali Museum - and several students had their portrait done by local artists.
Every night we played "parlor games" like the Surrealists used to do - hosted by a different group of students each night.
We saw the works of many of the Surrealists and one of the original printings of our text at the Pompidou Center. In addition we experienced some Parisian contemporary art with a surreal twist. We visited the Picasso museum who was influenced by and friendly with many Surrealists.
We took time out because we were in Paris to see Champs Elysees, Arc de Triomphe, and an authentic Parisian flea market!
Our last day we took a day trip to Chartres to see the cathedral.
