Will my child have homework?
Homework is an important part of the learning process, especially as students get older. Beginning in first grade, our teachers will give some homework assignments and occasionally children will bring work home they were unable to finish during the school day. Teachers usually will give little or no homework during weekends, holidays, and vacations.
How involved can I be in my child's school day?
Parents are welcomed members of our community. There will be times when you are invited by your child's homeroom teacher to participate in a classroom activity. Parent volunteers also can come on field trips, help to serve lunch, and organize clubs or after school activities.
What if my child needs help in a subject area?
We recognize the importance of one-on-one help for our students. Our teachers can spend extra time with students before and after school, or during recess. For those who need additional support, we provide specially trained teachers through our Learning Resources and Reading Resources programs.
How will my child be graded?
In the Lower School we don't assess students with actual grades. Parents of junior and senior kindergarten students will receive a detailed report of their cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development at the end of the year. For students in grades one through five, reports are sent home twice a year. These reports contain formal, written assessments of students? progress.
Are there options available to my child before and after school?
To accommodate the varying needs of Lower School families we offer both before and after school care through the Extended Day program. Extended Day provides a balance of organized activities and free time. Students can participate in arts, crafts, computer classes, and outdoor play.
What about extracurricular opportunities?
Another option for students, starting in first grade, is to pursue their individual interests through the After School Resources program, clubs, the Lower School athletics program, and, once they reach fifth grade, the Wind Ensemble. All these groups meet either before or after school.
