"Multiculturalism is part of the fabric of this School. It is not an add-on; it is not represented by one course. It is present everywhere."

With more than a thousand students enlivening the buildings that comprise The Latin School of Chicago, you can be sure that there are more than a thousand Latin experiences each year, not just one. But the School holds certain
values dear, and they become part of what every person in the community experiences as uniquely Latin.
First, Latin is a place where people love to learn. Students are actively engaged in their own learning through reading, discussing, writing, participating in group activities, practicing, experimenting, and analyzing. Latin teachers set the tone, encouraging students to not settle for the easy answer, to always ask the next question, to consider other points of view, to read and think and explore, and to put their knowledge to use. Latin students know this: learning is never "finished," it is a process that will enrich their lives forever.
Latin is a place in which there is no penalty for trying your hardest. In fact, that's what we hope for every day. Every class is a model of encouragement and respect between and among students and faculty, so every class is a safe zone for taking intellectual risks. Students learn early on that their contributions to each class are valuable, and they learn to value the contributions of their peers as well.
Latin is all about relationships. With small classes and caring teachers, students feel like they are part of a family. Throughout their years at Latin, students will have the opportunity to mentor students younger than themselves, and to benefit from
the advice of older students. Their friends will represent many neighborhoods and cultures, whether they are life-long Chicagoans or recent transplants to the city. Friendships formed at Latin last a lifetime.
Latin teachers are excellent role models, and they make their own scholarship easily accessible to students. Our teachers are painters and musicians, scientists and playwrights, actors and mathematicians, anthropologists and poets, athletes and historians. Regardless of their field of endeavor, they are mentors and friends. Through our small class sizes and low student to faculty ratio, teachers and
students develop important relationships that enable students to see what it is like to be a passionate life-long learner.
Latin's buildings are well equipped to encourage learning. With up to date technology in the libraries, classrooms, and computer labs, and state of the art theatres and art studios, Latin is a leader in technology, science, and the arts. But learning does not stop within the School's four walls. Latin's teachers use Chicago as the classroom. From field trips to the city's leading cultural institutions to independent research at nearby universities and the Lincoln Park Zoo, students benefit from all that Latin's urban setting has to offer.
Latin encourages its students to have a balance in their lives. Students are active not only in the classroom but also on the playing fields and the stage, in the studios and the community.
Involved and engaged.
That's what Latin is all about.
